Why I Prefer Candids When Shooting Newborn Photos

Before I had a baby, I never gave much thought to newborn photos. All through my pregnancy I was scrolling through examples of highly staged newborn shoots, thinking I wanted to do the same with Thomas, but when it actually came to it, I realized I was getting so hung up on picking a theme, trying to swaddle him up and getting earthing perfect, that I wasn't capturing any of his personality.

While highly staged newborn shots can be very beautiful, this type of session wasn't right for our family. As soon as I stopped trying to stage the moment, I was able to capture the perfect moments effortlessly. I took on a photojournalistic approach, telling the story of our first few days of parenthood and being in the moment with our new baby boy. It was so much more comfortable for everyone, we could be ourselves, interact with our baby and not have to worry about holding poses or adjusting unnecessary props. The images were simple, but truly captured the magic of life with a newborn.
